July 2, 2003 - NEWS RELEASE
Let's get the 2010 shovels in the ground ASAP!
Burnaby, B.C. - Now that we have the good news that Vancouver has won the right to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, it is time to get to work on facilities and infrastructure construction.
With almost 30,000 construction jobs expected to be created by Olympic facilities construction and related infrastructure—such as the RAV Line, the Convention Centre expansion and the Sea to Sky Highway upgrade—the provincial government and the Olympic Organizing Committee should be mindful of getting an early start on the work to ensure that construction gets done on time and on budget.
“To get the best value for taxpayer dollars and to help with labour supply planning, one of the top priorities for the organizers of the games should be to spread out the construction over the seven years from now until 2010, and to get started soon,” says ICBA Executive Vice President Philip Hochstein. “A well-planned, phased approach to construction will result in the most competitive pricing and will offer many apprentices the opportunities and volume of steady work required to become trade certified.”
“Governments devote a lot of energy and resources toward human resource planning and that’s great,” adds Hochstein. “But getting an early start and spreading out the work is probably the easiest and most important thing to do, and ICBA wants to make sure this doesn’t get overlooked amongst all the labour supply studies and reports sure to be generated in the run up to the Games.”
