Construction dream team volunteers to advise government and organizers on olympic projects

Burnaby, B.C. – “On time, on budget,” is the focus of a taskforce of BC construction industry leaders who have come together to provide advice to government and games organizers on the construction of 2010 Olympic facilities and allied projects.

The 2010 Construction Leaders Taskforce is made up of the senior executives from British Columbia’s largest construction companies with over 400 years of collective experience in all facets of construction required in the buildup to 2010. Philip Hochstein, Executive Vice President of the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association, will chair the taskforce.

“To get an Olympics right, you have to get the construction right,” said Hochstein. “And we have put together a Dream Team of construction industry expertise and talent to advise government and games planners on how to do just that.”

“The members of this task force compete hard against each other for projects every day, but they are also proud British Columbians who are willing to work together to give government and games organizers the best possible advice on how to complete the 2010 construction program on time and on budget,” said Hochstein.

Members of the taskforce will serve in a volunteer capacity and provide advice on issues such as: labour supply, project budgeting, sequencing of construction projects, tendering and potential cost drivers. The taskforce will also provide recommendations related to any technical matters referred to its panel of experts by the government or Olympics organizers.

“The building of the games venues and facilities is really the construction industry’s Olympic competition,” Hochstein said. “For BC’s construction companies, Vancouver 2010 will be an opportunity to showcase our building talent on the world stage.”

“Critics of the games are looking for mistakes but BC doesn’t need that now,” concluded Hochstein. “The 2010 Construction Leaders Taskforce will be focused positively on how to avoid mistakes in the first place.”
