Victoria’s John Knappett elected to top ICBA post
Burnaby, B.C. – Victoria-based general contractor John Knappett, P.Eng. has been elected to a one-year term as president of the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of British Columbia.
Knappett, who has more than 25 years experience in the construction industry, is owner and CEO of the Knappett Group of Companies, one of Vancouver Island’s largest construction companies.
“The next six years promise to be very busy and challenging for British Columbia’s construction industry, in light of the 2010 Olympics,” Knappett said. “That will be one of our main areas of focus, even as we work to ensure that the strong upswing the industry is currently experiencing is felt beyond the Lower Mainland and throughout the province.”
Knappett was born and raised on Vancouver Island, and earned a bachelor of applied science degree in civil engineering from the University of British Columbia. He also completed the diploma of technology program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
A Gold Seal certified project manager, Knappett worked in construction and consulting engineering on several projects across B.C. and the Yukon, prior to establishing the Knappett Group of Companies in 1983. From early projects such the construction of an ambulance station in Prince Rupert and the popular UFO H2O water feature for Expo 86, the company has grown to a size of more than 100 employees, with annual revenues of over $35 million.
Recent projects completed by the Knappett Group have included the Victoria police headquarters, an ultra-violet disinfection plant for the capital regional district, the Vancouver Island youth detention centre in Victoria, as well as major bridges and other structures on the Vancouver Island Highway Project. The company also completed the Sun Peaks Resort and Kicking Horse Mountain wastewater treatment plants and many Real Canadian Superstore facilities around the province.
Knappett is a member of the board of advisors of the University of Victoria’s faculty of business. He served as director-at-large of the Canadian Construction Association and as a member of the organization’s General Contractors Council. He was also a member and chair of the board of directors of the Construction Association of Victoria and currently sits on the Construction Leaders Task Force, a group that was recently set up to advise the B.C. government on 2010 Olympic construction projects.
