ICBA Commentary: Building Permits

VANCOUVER -- The Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA) offered the following commentary on today's Statistics Canada release of the building permit survey for July 2008.

"While building permit numbers will fluctuate by month, we're more concerned with trends," said Philip Hochstein, President of the ICBA. "The building permit numbers suggest a moderation in construction activity in B.C., after years of an overheated market."

Hochstein pointed out that a moderation in construction activity is one of the factors now making B.C. a buyers’ market, which is good news for consumers.

"A slowdown in the construction sector means it is a good time for governments to launch infrastructure projects as we now have the capacity to take on major projects”, he added.
