New training courses paying off for industry, students

Students learn rebar skills that will put them in good stead to fill vacancies in the field

Relief is on the way for severe shortages of skilled workers, particularly in the areas of reinforcing steel and formwork.

With an increasing backlog of major construction projects on the drawing board - especially those with major concrete components such as many Olympic facilities, the RAV line, high rise towers and new bridges - ICBA has been helping coordinate industry initiatives to develop training programs to attract, train and certify young workers in these high opportunity trades.

Recently, two classes of 16 students each have graduated from programs for reinforcing steel installers and formwork technicians - and over 90% of those students have already found employment.

Industry leaders have developed up-to-date training programs and standards - approved for provincial credentials by the Industry Training Authority - and they have launched pilot programs this past spring.

More programs are scheduled for later this year and, with continued support, these provincial credentials will be helping our industry recruit and retain more young British Columbians.
